Guide — Authentication

How to authenticate a Chanel bag

Counterfeits are getting finer. Here are the points an expert examines to validate a Chanel bag — useful to reassure yourself before a sale, though never a substitute for a hands-on appraisal.

Authenticating a Chanel bag doesn't come down to a single detail, but to the consistency of the whole: a good counterfeit sometimes nails one point, rarely all of them at once. Here are the areas our leather experts check systematically.

The essential checkpoints

  • Leather and quilting. Even grain, the leather's firmness, and above all the alignment of the quilting: on a genuine piece the diamonds meet cleanly, including across seams and around pockets.
  • Stitching. Tight, regular and consistent stitches. Irregular or overly spaced seams are a red flag.
  • The CC clasp. The right C overlaps on top, the left C overlaps at the bottom. The hardware is heavy, well finished, with no burrs.
  • The "Chanel" stamp. Clean, even embossing of the name and of "Made in France" / "Made in Italy", at a consistent depth.
  • Serial number and card. The number (hologram inside) must be consistent with the authenticity card and with the bag's presumed era.
  • The finishes. Lining, rivets, leather-threaded chain: Chanel leaves no detail neglected.

The most common pitfalls

Recent "superfakes" reproduce the logo and shape well, but often betray themselves on the whole: slightly misaligned quilting, hardware that's too light, a hologram inconsistent with the number, or an unusual smell of glue. A cluster of clues matters more than a single criterion — and some elements (card, box) are themselves copied: on their own they never prove authenticity.

Having your piece authenticated

A visual check gives a strong indication, but only a physical appraisal settles it. At Ecrila, every bag is checked by hand before any firm offer — discover our appraisal approach. If the examination reveals a counterfeit, no offer is made and the piece is returned to you free of charge.

Once reassured about authenticity, see how much your Chanel bag is worth on resale or present it directly to obtain a buyback.
